Life Story for Lewis Albert "Bert" Schmaltz

In his early years Bert grew up in Windsor Ontario, one in a family of six children (Ruth, Bill, Lynn, Dell and Helen). As many adventurous young men of that time did, Bert left the family nest early, to explore the world. Before joining active service, he did everything from ride the rails to being a golf caddy.
A veteran of WW2,Bert had medals and stories (galore!) He enjoyed being a member of both the RCNA and the Legion. Connecting with fellow veterans to share experiences and swap stories was a very big part of Bert’s life. Bert secured a position at Cyanamid in Niagara Falls and worked there most of his adult life, until retirement. A hard worker, and not one to sit idle, he supplemented this work at intervals by running a mink farm, raising live stock, servicing his trap lines and sourcing and chopping cords (and cords, and cords…) of wood to heat the family home. Even with so much on the go, he and Marg always made time to travel when vacation time came. Bert and his wife Margaret would travel each summer to the distant untouched regions of Northern Ontario, and set up camp on crown land, with their travel trailer and all the supplies needed to survive comfortably and at a nice distance from civilization. To say that Bert loved hunting and fishing would be an understatement. So many memories, friendships and adventures came out of his passion for the great outdoors.Bert loved Marg’s cooking, which was always a central part of life on “the farm”. Parties and celebrations with family and friends always included heaping portions of food and equally generous conversation. Especially the annual turkey parties, featuring all of the season’s bounty from “the bird” right through to the tomatoes from Bert’s garden. All-you-can-eat buffets have nothing on a Schmaltz Turkey Party.
